495,450. Pipe connections. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 13, 1937, No. 13552. Convention date, May 13, 1936. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe coupling B, for example, on the transportable part of a truck-type electric switch is positively connected to a pipe coupling A on the stationary part of the switch by pawls 19 on the coupling B which are engaged with and disengaged from the rear end of a cap 8 on the coupling A respectively upon movement of the couplings towards and away from each other. The coupling B consists of two telescopic parts 10, 13 with an interposed spring 12, the part 13 carrying a ring 21 on which is pivoted at 20 angle levers 16 provided with pivots 22 for the pawls 19, and the part 10 carrying a ring 14 connected to the levers 16 by links 15. The two couplings are also provided with non-return valves 2, 3, one of which is formed with a stem 4. The arrangement is such that when the coupling B is first moved towards the coupling A a spigot 7 on the former engages a packing-ring 9 within the cap 8 of the latter to make a tight joint, the stem 4 opening the valves 2, 3 and the pawls 19 engaging said cap ; further movement of the couplings effects relative movement of the parts 10, 13 and causes pins 23 on the levers 16 to lock the pawls in this position, the pawls being actuated by the same pins to permit separation of the parts upon movement of the couplings in the reverse direction. The pawls are preferably normally biassed to engaging position by a spring 191.
