505,601. Electron lenses. ZEISS IKON AKT.-GES. Nov.16, 1937, No. 31330. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1936. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] Chromatic aberration in an electron lens ia removed by introducing an oppositely directed spherical aberration,; this is possible if, as is stated to be the case, the electron velocity in a beam of electrons increases with the angle of emission and hence with the distance from, the axis. Preferably the diameter of the electron rav is made to exceed half the diameter of the lens. In one form the lens. is a series of short coaxial rings maintained at steadily increasing potentials by tappings on a voltage divider. In anotherform, a short magnetic lens having small spherical error is followed by an electrostatic lens of two coaxial rings, the potential of the first being variable to enable the spherical error to be adjusted.
