Abstract
504,342. Mine-props. ESSEN-BOTTROPER HANDELS-GES. Dec. 5, 1938, No. 35403. Convention date, Sept. 20. [Class 20 (ii)] A telescopic pit-prop, of the kind in which an upper member is supported within a lower member by lateral pressure exerted by a wedge, such as in Specification 411,768, has a sleeve surrounding the upper end of the lower member and a cam fixed to the lower member to restrain the sleeve from downward movement. The upper member 16 is clamped within the upper end of the lower member 10 by means of pressure exerted by laterally movable wedge 13 and block 14, the wedge coacting with an inclined face of a sleeve 12 surrounding the upper end of the lower member, and the block engaging in an aperture 15 in the lower proper member. Welded to the lower prop member on the side opposite to the wedge and block, is an auxiliary downwardly-inclined wedge 11 adapted to coact with an inclined surface on the sleeve, the inclines being such that the parts are just self locking. In order to prevent the sleeve from slipping as the wedge 13 is driven in, a cam 19 is rotatably mounted on a bracket 18 on the lower prop member, so that in one position it prevents downward movement of the sleeve while in other positions it allows such movements for release of the prop. An aperture 22 is provided in the block 14 into which the wedge 13 may engage as the sleeve and wedge are knocked downwardly after the cam has been rotated to the release position, and lips 17 are also provided on the block to prevent it falling into the lower prop member after release.
