Abstract

495,492. Mine-roof supports. MAVOR & COULSON, Ltd., and MAVOR, J. B. July 5, 1937, No. 18593. [Class 20 (ii)] A beam B for use in mining, quarrying, and the like, by insertion into a cut or slot-way 2, e.g. in a coal-face A, Fig. 1, carries means whereby its inner end can be tightened against the upper and lower faces of the cut, retained in that position, and slackened for withdrawal of the beam. The roof cut 2, into which the beam B is inserted, extends further inwardly than a floor cut 1 as described in Specification 494,186. The inner end of the beam shown in Fig. 2 is provided with a shoe 4 connected thereto by toggles 5 which are operated by a rack-and-lever device 7, 8, through a rod 6, to wedge the beam in position. The shoe may, alternatively, be connected with the beam by a pair of parallel links so as to be controlled by a lever-controlled push rod. The beam shown in Fig. 3 is provided with a fixed wedge 10 which is in dovetail-sliding engagement with a wedge 11 ; when the beam is inserted into the cut, wedging occurs after the wedge 11 reaches the back of the cut. An alternative wedging device comprises a plate 14, Fig. 5, which is pivoted to the beam and has two arcuate wedges 15 corresponding to two arcuate wedges 13 on the underside of the beam This beam is inserted into the cut in an askew position and is thereafter swung, either by direct action or ratchet device, into mid-position to tighten it in the cut. The underside of the plate 14 is roughened to hinder it from turning when the beam is swung. The beam shown in Fig. 7 has a screw-jack arranged at its inner end comprising a plate 16, a screw 17, a worm-wheel 18 forming a nut on the screw 17, a worm 19, and an outwardly-extending rod 20. The wedging mechanism is also stated to comprise a combination of two or more devices of toggle, wedge, screw, cam, or lever character. The Provisional Specification describes also wedging means of screw-jack type adapted to operate upper and lower hinged jaws.
