Abstract

500,678. Sharpening cutting - blades. BROUSSOUSE, F. L. March 9, 1938, Nos. 7399 and 7400. Convention dates, March 9, 1937 and Oct. 13, 1937. [Class 60] Knives and other cutting blades are sharpened by simultaneously thinning the edge by means of grindstones and finishing the edge by means of hard metal &c. discs. On the upper edges 1, 2 of a frame 3 are mounted, on axles 4, 5, groups of overlapping metal discs 6, 7 and in the space between the discs are grindstones 8, 9, carried by arms 12, 13 pivoted at 14, 15, with their peripheries held in contact by springs 16, 17. In operation, the blade 18 is moved to and fro lengthwise with its edge resting on the discs 6, 7, the grindstones then engaging symmetrically the faces of the blade. In a modification, pairs of spaced grindstones are carried by the pivoted arms and engage with their outer side faces the inner side faces of the discs, thereby preventing lateral movement or rocking of the parts due to play in the bearings. The grindstones may be mounted on an oscillating or sliding frame, and the discs may be replaced by elements of any desired shape. The grindstones may be of steel with peripheral corrugations; the discs 6, 7 may be mounted on the movable supports. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the provision of means for rotating the grindstones. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
