[Class 114] [Also in Group XXVII] Ship machinery comprises two or more main internal-combustion engines for driving ahead and an auxiliary engine for slow ahead or astern driving, all of which are geared directly to a common propeller shaft through a pinion thereon and all having coupling means whereby the engines can be used at will. Internalcombustion engines 10 are each connected by a coupling 12 with a shaft 7 carrying a pinion 5, or a claw coupling 9 which can be connected with the pinion 5, gearing with a large pinion 3 common to all the plant and fixed to a propeller shaft 1. A smaller engine 11 is similarly coupled to the main pinion 3, but has in between a reversing gear-box. The couplings may be either mechanical or hydraulic or magnetic.
