Abstract

463,881. Propelling - gear for ships and aircraft. WILLIAMS, G. H. KREASEL-. Oct. 29, 1935, No. 29850. [Classes 4 and 114] In propulsion gear where the main propeller is driven by a prime mover the craft is provided with conduits through which the exterior fluid may flow and a pump or the like driven off the main prime mover is provided for assisting such flow and the delivery conduits contain turbine or like power units which drive auxiliary propellers. The main propeller shaft 15 is driven by an internal combustion engine 2 which at its forward end has a shaft 33 driving a pump 5 which is contained in a conduit 7. The forward end of the conduit 7 is branched at 8, 9 to open outwardly at 10, 11, whilst the other end is branched and the two conduits 17, 18 are provided with turbine members 21-24, these turbines driving shafts 25, 26 respectively, upon which are mounted auxiliary screw propellers. In the junction piece 16 on the conduit is provided a valve member 31 whereby the flow through the conduits 17, 18 can be controlled and thus steering of the ship effected. In a modification, a single turbine is provided immediately aft of the pump and from its shaft are driven, by belt or like gearing, the two side shafts which carry the auxiliary propellers. From this turbine shaft drives may be utilized to operate other units such as a dynamo.
