Abstract
495,444. Fluid-pressure servomotorcontrol systems. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and CLINCH, A. C. May 11, 1937, No. 13418. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIII] A power plant assembly for an aeroplane which includes a variable-pitch screw propeller under centrifugal governor control is also provided with connections from the governor to the throttle valve of the engine. A variablepitch propeller is provided with hydraulic pitch varying gear 11, 12, coupled by pipes 16, 17 to a pump 21 driven by a shaft 22 from the engine shaft. Bevel gears 23, 24 drive a centrifugal governor 26, a lever 34 thereof providing control of the pump flow in the pipes 16, 17. A further lever 40 operated by the governor is connected by linkages with a control valve 81 of a hydraulic piston unit 71 which through linkages operate upon the throttle lever 46. This throttle control is further linked by a rod 53 with a booster control 61 that effects its control through a second valve apparatus 65. In the event of the pitch changes not producing sufficiently quickly a control of the revolutions per minute, the overriding throttle control comes into play. In a modification, the linkage 40 is replaced by an electric linkage, the arm 39 in this case moving between contact points in an electric circuit which also includes a solenoid adapted to operate the hydraulic piston valve. It may also be provided that the two hydraulic valves shall control separate hydraulic pistons which are suitably linked to the link 47 instead of using a single piston 71.
