Abstract
479,888. Fluid - pressure servomotor - control systems. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., MILNER, H. L., and FEDDEN, A. H. R. Oct. 28, 1936, No. 29335. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIII] In hydraulic systems for actuating the variable pitch mechanism of air screws, the return conduit to the hydraulic pump is connected with the discharge side of the lubricating oil pump of the engine, so as to maintain therein a positive pressure. The hydraulic system includes a piston 11 and cylinder 10 mounted within the boss the cylinder being coupled to the blade for changing the pitch. In the usual manner passages along the hub and crank-shaft are connected by pipes 23, 28 with the casing of the hydraulic pump. This pump includes a cylinder block 30 which is rotatable by power and has bores 31 in which are inserted pistons 32, the rods 33 of which are coupled to a pin 34. The eccentricity of this pin which is carried by an end plate 35 can be varied by movement of that plate longitudinally, and to such an extent as to provide for reverse flow. In one construction, a centrifugal governor 44 is connected by pivoted lever 50 with the adjusting rod 52 of the plate 35. For the purpose of setting the speed at which the governor is intended to control the apparatus, a further spring 53 may be coupled to the rod 52, the degree of tension of which is adjustable by a screw and nut gear from the hand wheel 55. The two conduits 23, 28 are connected by pipes 61, 62 through valves in a common casing 60 which has a connection 63 to the delivery pipe 64 of the engine oil lubricating pump 65 the latter having a pressure control valve 69. The valve gear within the casing 60 comprises two valves 70, 71, with interengaging guide sleeves 75 and under a common spring restraint 76, the arrangement being such that these valves form pressure relief valves for the two pipes. Carried by these two valves are smaller valves 77, 78, which are under spring control 80 whereby they are adapted to lift when the pressure within the conduit, which for the moment is acting as a return conduit, falls below that in the pipe line 63 whereby the pressure in the conduit is built up to that in the pipe line 63.
