Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a train f, g, j the end elements of which are driven alternatively or simultaneously from two countershafts a', a<2>, the element not driven being arrested. Additional speeds are produced by driving the train solid from the shafts a<1>, a<2> severally. Gears b<1>, b<2> loose on the shafts a<1>, a<2> and adapted to be connected thereto by clutches d<1>, d<2> mesh with a gear b on a driving-shaft a Worm or other gearing e<1>, c<2> connects the shafts a<1>, a<2> to the elements f, j. The bevel nr spur planet elements g are carried by a sleeve h connected through a clutch p to a sleeve c to be driven. The clutches d', d<2> and brakes m<1>, n are connected to pedals s<1>, s<2> so that as a clutch on one shaft is engaged, the other shaft may be held by a brake, while both clutches may be engaged when both brakes are off. The solid drives of the epicyclic train are effected by engaging the clutch p, and at the same time a clutch k connecting the gear j to the sleeve c. Reversed driving is effected by driving the gear f, arresting the carrier of the planet gears g by a brake m<2>, and connecting the gear j to the sleeve c. The invention is applicable for driving vehicles on land, on water, or in the air.
