Abstract

490,644. Knitting. LARKWOOD-SILK HOSIERY MILLS, Inc. Dec. 20, 1937, No. 35219. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1936. [Class 74 (ii)] A stocking knitted from toe to top has heel tabs produced simultaneously with the knitting of the foot and on the same knitting head. The stocking is produced on a full-fashioned machine by first knitting a welt W, then knitting the foot and leg beginning at the toe with the welt loops on the needles below the knocking over bits and finally knitting a course joining the leg L and welt. After moving the welt loops below the bits, yarn is fed to a number of needles to form the toe and also to additional needles spaced therefrom on each side to form a strip of fabric 4 which is subsequently widened at 4b to form heel tabs 4c. Ravel courses 1 and a loose course 2 are formed prior to beginning the toe proper which is widened and provided with diamond markings 5, 5a, by inner and outer transfer points operating on each side of the fabric and movable outwardly to the extent of one and two needle spaces respectively On completion of toe, the instep and reinforced sole are knitted with widening at 38 and a loose course 40 after which separate yarns are fed for forming ravel courses 42 and the instep and sole and the ravel fabric 42 pressed off. The loops of the last course of the heel tabs are then removed from their needles and placed on the needles which formed the ravel courses and the knitting of the high splice and leg is continued. Alternatively the yarn forming the instep &c. may be fed to the needles forming the ravel courses and the heel tab loops placed on the ravel course needles without pressing off, the ravel courses being subsequently removed by cutting. On completion of the leg which is widened at 46, 48 and 50, the welt loops are raised above the knocking-over bits and cast off with the last course of leg loops during the knitting of a loose course which is followed by ravel courses and subsequently placed on looper points to form an outer ravel selvedge. The ravel courses are then removed.
