Abstract

448,854. Knitting. LOWE, E., 18, Walden Road, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Nov. 12, 1934, No. 32501. [Class 74 (ii)] In the production of a stocking, severances terminating in selvedges are made at the junction of leg and foot, which are knitted as one piece, the depth of the severances being substantially equal to the width of selvedged heel tabs which are subsequently added, the inner selvedged edges of the tabs being connected to the foot side of the severances. The last course 4 of the high splice 8 of a flat blank is placed on a running-on stand and cuts 11 are made in the blank along lines defined by two courses the outer ends 5 of which are of single thread only, the cuts extending to the inner edges of the single thread areas The blank is now transferred to a running-on. bar, and thence to a machine which knits on heel tabs 9. The inner selvedged edges 10 of the heel tabs are now united on a linking machine, with a slack course 6, and the part between the cut, and course 6 is roved out or cut off. The portions 5 may be composed of legging thread or reinforcing thread, by limiting the traverse of either the splicing thread carriers or the legging thread carrier. Each cut 11 may be opened out and one or more loops beyond the inner point 12 run on to the stand points. Alternatively, and to inhibit puckering at the heel, one or more wales may be knitted on to the tabs 9 only, beyond the points 12. In this case, the slack loops subsequently formed by boning, and used to link the heel tab to the foot bottom, occur in the same wale as the innermost needle of those bearing transferred loops. In a modification, (Fig. 11) selvedged eyelet holes 19 may be formed by introducing separate thread carriers to knit the outer portions 16 over a few courses 18 and limiting the travel of the original carrier to the central portion 17. To strengthen the heel corners, the holes 19 may be opened out, and one or more of their selvedge loops transferred to additional stand points. Also, as before, additional wales may be knitted to the inner edges of the heel tabs to form selvedges, and this extra width, or an increased length of the tabs, may replace the courses 18 which will be removed. Alternatively, Fig. 10 (not shown), eyelet holes may be produced by stitch transference, a course of slack stitches along which cuts may be made, extending from the eyelets to the edges of the fabric. In a further modification, Fig. 12, three thread carriers may be employed and two or three courses knitted in three portions to form a selvedge, knitting then being temporarily suspended on the middle portion, as by pushing the stitches below the knocking over bits, after which those stitches are again raised above the knocking over bits, so producing parts 20, which can be slit up. To avoid cutting, when half the courses of the parts 20 have been knitted, pressing off by feeding no thread may be effected on the needles knitting these parts, and then knitting resumed afresh. In a still further modification, at or near the last course of the leg panel and high splicing, no thread is fed to the end groups of the needles for one or more courses and then normal knitting resumed. If the foot is to be widened and movable knocking- over bits are not employed, the widening may be done in several stages in those courses which are subsequently removed. The machine may be provided with means for producing lace or other clocks. The cutting may be done manually or mechanically. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 401,922.
