Abstract

A process of making a cast iron alloy containing aluminium, comprises pouring molten cast iron into a heated receptacle containing molten aluminium, and bubbling through the molten mixture a gas having as its chief constituents carbon and chlorine. Chromium may be added to the molten cast iron prior to its addition to the aluminium. The resulting alloy may contain 0,5-9 per cent of aluminium with or without 0,1-3,5 per cent of chromium. In specific examples, alloys contain also 1 per cent of silicon. The gas may be trichlorethylene vapour or carbon tetrachloride vapour or it may be obtained from chlorinated pitch.
