Abstract

485,532. Printing-machines. HADDAN, R. (Duplex Printing Press Co.) Oct. 15, 1937, No. 28147. [Class 100 (ii)] A rotary multi-unit printing press which comprises a number of interchangeable printing units and a folder unit or units is built up of a number of units capable of printing in multicolour, each unit being formed of a pair of impression cylinders 2, 2a mounted in fixed bearings, and printing-cylinders 1, 1a arranged below the cylinders and one or more colourprinting cylinders 1m arranged above the cylinders 2; 2a. The printing-plates are preferably of tubular form as described in Specification 19824/07, [Class 100], and are of two-page width. The printing-cylinders are mounted so as to be capable of being moved vertically by means of screws, and the cylinders 1m are mounted in pivoted hangers 5 carried by the screws 6b which effect the vertical adjustment. The cylinders 2, 2a are mounted in bearings formed in part in side frame members 3, and in part in blocks 3c secured to the members 3 by bolts 3d. The bearings 4a for the cylinders 1a are carried by hangers 4 adjustably secured to the blocks 3c by means of screws 4c which are tightened after the hangers 4 have been adjusted vertically relatively to the blocks 3c by means of screws 4d which are rotatably suspended in lugs 3e on the blocks 3c. When one of the printing-rollers 1m is to be put out of action, the screws 5c are moved outwards and the roller tends to move away from its impression cylinder under the action of gravity, and the cylinder may be held in non-operative position by a bolt 5e tapped in the side of the casting 5 which is caused to engage a groove 5f in the bolt 5c. When the bolt 5c is released from the locking bolt 5e, and the bolts 5c are tightened, the cylinder 1m returns to its original operative position and to the same degree of adjustment since this is controlled by the screws 6b. As shown in Fig. 2, a web is perfected in black and colour by being passed first around the roll 2 and then around the roll 2a, but the path of the web may be varied. Six units as shown arranged side-by-side in line will print a 24 page newspaper with impressions perfected in black and colour, and eight units will print a 32 page newspaper.
