Abstract

1,203,968. Printing apparatus. HOE-CRABTREE Ltd. 17 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 57726/67. Heading B6C. An offset printing machine is usable either for perfecting or for multi-colour printing and is converted from one use to the other by displacement of an impression cylinder and one of a plurality of blanker cylinders transversely of their axes. Blanker cylinders 20, 22 may cooperate in perfecting, or may co-operate separately with impression cylinder 24. When the machine is used for perfecting impression cylinder 24 occupies a position 24A, in which it is not in contact with blanker cylinders 20, 22, and when the machine is used for multicolour printing the cylinder 24 is in contact with both blanker cylinders 20, 22. Movement of blanker cylinder 20 out of contact with blanker cylinder 22, and of impression cylinder 24, is by rotation of eccentric mounts. Eccentric mounts of smaller displacement are used to trip cylinders 12, 14, 18, 22 and 24 between operative and inoperative positions, and impression cylinder 24 may occupy four positions in all. A web to be printed on may be perfected by blanker cylinders 20, 22, then have a further image printed on one side by blanker cylinder 18. Alternatively it may receive successive images on one side from all three blanker cylinders 18, 20, 22. Printing cylinders 12, 14, 16 carry lithographic plates, to which ink and water are supplied. Pneumatic rams may be used to trip the cylinders and varying arrangements of gears and clutches are used to drive them from a shaft.
