[Class 102 (i)] A reciprocating pump comprises several cylinders, each drawing from a common suction port 13 and delivering past a valve 18 to a pipe connected to a common delivery pipe. A spring-loaded byepass valve 23 connects the pump chamber to a common port 22 which is preferably connected to the suction reservoir. A lever 28 is mounted on an eccentric portion 32 of a shaft 34 and connected by a pin 9 to the plunger 8 and carries a roller 26 for actuating the byepass valve 23. The annular area of a differential piston is exposed to the delivery pressure and the piston has a rack engaging gearing connected to the shaft 34. The shaft 34 is loaded by a spring connected to an arm on the shaft. Alternatively, the spring may be wound round a sector of constant or varying radius fixed to the shaft 34 and have its other end fixed to a variable abutment to vary the delivery pressure.
