Abstract
482,246. Valves ; valve gear. ARTON, J. H. July 22, 1937. No. 20296. [Class 7 (vi)] In a compressionignition engine, the air-inlet valve A is arranged within the exhaust valve Band is actuated bv a cam having two lobes, one of which corresponds to the usual inlet valve cam, and the other is of the same form and disposed at the same angle as the exhaust valve cam, so that the inlet valve gear follows up the inlet valve when the latter is carried downwards by the opening of the exhaust valve. The springs F, F<1> closing the valves are arranged outside the cylinder head to keep them cool. In a modification, the inlet valve is actuated by a normal cam and push rod, and by a lever comprising two arms 1, 4, Fig. 3, pivoted at 2 and pressed apart by a spring 7 acting on a plunger 8, which slides in a cylinder 6 on the arm 4 and contacts with an abutment 9 on the arm 1. The spring may be replaced by a hydraulic device. In another modification, the inlet valve is actuated by a normal cam and rocker, and by a telescopic push rod, either spring or hydraulically loaded.
