Abstract

479,565. Handle-bars. CROKER, T. J. July 26, 1937, No. 6164. [Class 136 (iii)] Handle-bars for cycles and like vehicles are provided with a member (e.g. an extension) embodying a support for the forearm to enable the latter to be used, in conjunction with the handle-bar grip, as a lever, and the upper arm as a strut, in order to support part of the weight of the body, whereby perineal pressure and fatigue of the back muscles are reduced. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the handle-bar has an extension m on which is mounted a support and fulcrum m<1> for the forearm, the support being pivoted at r, and its mounting being adjustably clamped by a screw m<2>. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the supporting member is adapted to swing transversely to clear the rider's body when turning, mounting, or dismounting, and comprises a forearm support m<1> on an arm m<3> pivoted, for vertical adjustment, to a yoke m<4>, which is pivoted at m<6> for transverse movement relatively to a lug m<7> formed on or attached to the handlebar. In other forms, a lug such as m<7> forms part of a member which is adapted to be clamped over or within the end of the handle-bar and which may carry the hand-grip. In other modifications, the arm carrying the forearm support is pivotally mounted on the handlebar ,or its stem, and is provided with another arm carrying the hand-grip.
