478,952. Indicating rate of ascent and descent of aircraft. KOLLSMAN, P. June 24, 1936, No. 17531. Convention date, June 28, 1935. [Class 106 (ii)] The speed of rise and fall of an aircraft is shown respectively on scales 4, 5 of a dial 2 by a pointer 3 actuated by a diaphragm B subjected on one side to the static pressure from a Pitot-tube by means of pipes 9, 8, the other side of the diaphragm being connected by a narrow pipe 6 to a vacuum-walled air container C having an automatic temperature-compensation valve 16 controlling the passage of air into the container C, which communicates with the pipe 9 by a moisture filter D and ducts 11, 10. The valve plate 16, which has a curved edge 18 serving to vary the restricted air connection 15 of the duct 11 with the chamber C, is automatically adjusted in position by expanding capsules 27, 28 containing gas under low pressure and housed in the chamber C. The mechanism for actuating the pointer 3 by the diaphragm B includes a rock-shaft 62 for a multiplying lever 63, one bearing 78 of the rock-shaft being movable by a thumb-screw 71 to compensate for local temperature conditions.
