Abstract

178,353. Duran, L. May 24, 1921. Variable-speed gearing suitable for motor vehicles is controlled by a governor acting through a spring-controlled bar upon a cam-drum which changes the engagement of clutches. A driving-shaft 2, Fig. 1, carries fixed gears 9, 10, 11 meshing with gears 4, 5, 6 loose on a countershaft 1. A driven shaft 3 in line with the shaft 2 carries fixed gears 12, 13, the latter meshing with an idler 8<a>. The shaft 1 is driven at three speeds by using clutches 14, 15, 16, alternatively, and drives the shaft 3 forwardly or reversely according to the position of a pair of sliding gears 7, 8 adapted to mesh with the gears 12, 8<a>. The reverse is operated by hand. The governor 17 is driven through gearing 56, 58 from the gear 12 on the driven shaft. The governor sleeve 61 acts through bars 18, 19, Fig. 2, in such a way as to give a step-by-step movement to the cam drum 20. When the bar 18 is moved by the governor to the right against a spring 54, a spring 64 is compressed. When a certain tension is reached, a rod 65 acting on an arm 66 of the bar 19 moves the bar 19, and this through rack and pinion 78, 79 turns the drum 20. A locking bar 71, Figs. 3 and 4, is moved transversely by a cam groove 75 in the bar 18 and by spring-pressed bolts 72, 73, 76, 77 &c. upon the bar 19 effects the locking of that bar in proper gear positions. Cam grooves 40, 41, 42 on the drum are connected through ratchet clutches 26 with the gear clutches 14, 15, 16. A fourth groove 80 actuates a sliding member 81 which interconnects the throttle of the engine, an " accelerator pedal " for controlling the throttle, and a shaft 84<a>, which controls the clutches 26.
