Abstract

476,184. Pressure-regulating valves. SWAN, A., and CLOTHIER, W. C. June 16, 1936, No. 16720. [Class 135] A pressure-regulating valve has a balanced closure comprising a sliding member co-operating with one or more fixed ports and a single positive ,seating valve member in series with the balanced valve member and on the delivery side thereof and arranged to close after the balanced valve. In the form shown in the Figure, the balanced valve comprises a tubular piston 5 provided with a balancing port 20 and slidably mounted in a ported member 6. The positive closure comprises a lift valve member 10 formed with a socket slidably mounted over a pin 9 on the piston valve. A projection on the valve 10 is normally held in contact with a stud 14 secured to the spring-loaded actuating diaphragm 1 subject to outlet pressure, by a spring 8 housed within the piston valve member. The two valve members are pressed apart by a spring 15 so that in the event of the piston valve sticking the two valves may separate to allow the lift valve member to close. The loading spring 3 may be made adjustable and the piston valve may be replaced by a sliding or rotary valve. The two valve members may be rigidly secured to each other and to the diaphragm. The upper side of the diaphragm may be acted on by a second controlling pressure.
