473,677. Variable - speed gearing. MONTERNO, J. DE. Jan. 11, 1936, Nos. 950, 951, and 952. Void. Convention dates, Jan. 11, 1935, April 24, 1935, and Oct. 21, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] An automatically continuously-variable speedgear comprises two differentials the bevel planets 32 and 38, Fig. 4, of which are carried by the driving and driven shafts 31 and 39 respectively. Side bevel wheels 33 and 36 are connected by a shaft 35 and the side bevel wheels 34 and 37 are also connected to rotate freely on shaft 35. The planets 38 are doubletoothed engaging with the bevel wheels 36 and 37 of different diameters so that when the drive is being transmitted a couple is exerted on these planets depending on the load resistance to the driven shaft 39. If the load is light this couple is insufficient to overcome the internal friction of the gearing and the whole rotates solid to transmit a direct drive, but on the load increasing this couple overcomes the internal resistance and rotates the planet 38 which results in a speed reduction of the driven shaft 39, the rotation of the planets 38 being taken up by a decrease in speed of the bevel wheel 36 and a corresponding increase in speed of the bevel wheel 37 through the driving differential 33, 32, 34. The internal friction of the gear may be increased by an adjustable friction device arranged between two of the members so as to modify the automatic operation as required. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 3, the operation is non-automatic, the speed variation being effected at will by a brake 25 operating on a member 24 of another small differential 21, 22, 24, coupled between the driving shaft 11 and a member integral with the intermediate bevels 14 and 17. In a still further modification, the symmetrical differential 16, 17, 18 of Fig. 3 is replaced by an asymmetric differential which results in an automatic speedreduction according to the load being obtained which, in addition, can be modified at will by braking the auxiliary differential 21, 22, 24. This additional regulation can also be made automatic according to some factor other than the load, such as speed, an electric current or temperature, or it can be coupled to the accelerator pedal or a control rheostat.
