Abstract

473,362. Cleaning and polishing machines. DERRIMAN, W. H. April 15, 1936, No. 10814. [Class 138 (i)] A cleaning or polishing machine for boots &c. or floors comprises a base plate or frame and a plurality of brushes or the like mounted as a unitary structure in bearings extending from the base plate or frame, in such a way that any one of the brushes can be brought into operative position at will. The unitary structure is adapted to be reciprocated relative to the base plate or frame, by means such as an electric motor. For cleaning boots &c. the machine comprises two brushes 10 and 11, and a polishing pad or third brush 12, mounted on a sleeve 7, which encloses a shaft 6. The sleeve may be rotated with respect to the shaft 6 by means of a handle 21, to bring the desired brush or pad into the operative position, as for example brush 11, Fig. 3. The shaft 6 is mounted in bearings 4 and 5, and is secured by a link 14 to another shaft 13 mounted in bearings 5 and 15, and is reciprocated by means of a motor 2 and a connecting rod 16. The apparatus is enclosed in a casing 3 in the top of which is an opening through which the brush in use projects. A tin of polish 29 is supported in a hole in the casing so that the brush 11 wipes across it when the handle 21 is pushed over to the right as viewed in Fig. 3. In a floor-polishing machine two brushes 54 and 55, Fig. 5, and two pads 56 and 57 are mounted on a shaft 53 which is slidable in bearings in standards extending downwards from the framework 50. The shaft is reciprocated by means of a link 62 which is pivoted at its centre to the frame, the end 61 being forked and extending between two collars 60 on the shaft and the other end being reciprocated by a connecting rod 65 secured at its other end to a disc 67 on a motor 59. By pushing the shaft 53 to the left, tipping the frame on the wheels 51, and turning a handle 58 secured to the shaft 53, the brushes 54 and 55 can be brought into operation in place of the pads 56 and 57, or vice versa. As the shaft 53 is turned, the brush 54 is wiped over a tin of polish 68. A tin of polish may also be provided for brush 55. The switch for the motor may be mounted on the handle 52.
