Abstract

472,393. Vehicle spring - suspensions ; laminated springs. BROCKHOUSE & CO., Ltd., J., and SMERDON, J. T. Feb. 21, 1936, No. 5233. [Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii)] A vehicle laminated supporting-spring connected at its ends and intermediate its ends respectively to the chassis &c. or axle &c. of the vehicle, or vice versa, is supplemented by an auxiliary spring comprising one or more resilient plates or the like which extend between the main spring and the respective vehicle part at or adjacent one end of the main spring. The auxiliary spring, the end portions of which, in all the constructions shown, extend in opposite directions, may be formed by an integral extension or extensions of one or more of the leaves of the main spring. As shown in Fig. 1, the auxiliary spring comprising a strip-metal plate 10, abuts the vehicle chassis at its curved upper end and at its lower end is riveted to the main spring 14, and is further secured by a U-shaped clip 17 fixed to the main spring. In modifications the lower end of the auxiliary spring may be formed channel-shape or with forked apertured ends to engage the main spring. Alternatively, the auxiliary spring may be secured to the chassis and bear on the upper face of the main spring. In another form, the auxiliary spring consists of an extension or extensions of one or more of the main spring leaves. When formed integral with the top spring leaf 14, as shown in Fig. 8, the auxiliary spring is formed with a securing eye 29 and engages a wear-plate 31 on the chassis. In other constructions the wear-plate is formed on the auxiliary spring by bending the latter back on itself or by securing a separate resilient plate thereon. Fig. 11, shows a laminated spring arranged transversely of the vehicle and formed with an extension 12 adapted to engage a wear-plate 35 mounted on the axle 36 or an abutment associated with the adjacent wheel. The auxiliary spring may be adapted to engage the main spring only when the latter is subjected to additional deflection. The invention is also shown applied to a two-wheel trailer such as is used for conveying aeroplanes, and having considerable length and, when loaded, a high centre of gravity. It is stated that the invention may also be used with three-quarter elliptic springs. The various details shown and described are applicable generally to the different constructions. British Specifications 7423/13, [Class 108 (iii)], and 174,448, [Class 108 (ii)], and U.S.A. Specification 1,858,930 are referred to.
