[Classes 59 and 86] In an edge-runner mill for rubber &c. in which the runner and pan are both positively driven, the edge-runner and pan are hollow and means are provided for circulating a heattransfer medium through the runner and pan. As shown, a revoluble pan 10 with wear plates 20 is mounted by a spigot 33 in a socket 29 supported on the base of the mill and the weight of the pan is carried by conical rollers 34 running on tracks 22, 25, the rollers being mounted in cage rings 37, 38. The pan is provided with hollow chambers through which a heating or cooling liquid, supplied by a pipe 47, follows a tortuous path. A toothed ring 18 is secured to the underside of the pan which is geared to a pinion 41 on a drive shaft 12 and the runner 11 is driven from the shaft 12 by gears 56, 57. The pan and runner may be driven independently by variable speed motors shown at 83, 84. The runner 11 is hollow and is supplied through a central tube with a heating or cooling medium and is supported in bearings 50, 51 carried by standards 54, 54a, the bearings being raised or lowered by screws 73 operated by worm and wormwheel from shaft 60. A scraper 83, Fig. 5, cleans the inclined edge of the pan and deflects the material under the runner 11, and a scraper 87 and shield 87a attached to the bottom of the bearing 51 cleans the spigot 10a in the centre of the pan. A sliding cover may be provided on the pan which is provided with an aperture for the roller, and hoppers may be provided to deliver definite quantities of other materials which are to be mixed with the batch. The roller may be adjustable axially on its shaft and may have a conical or curved periphery.
