[Class 44] In a fastening for doors and windows having vertical bolts each bolt has a laterally off-set arm adapted to engage behind a fixed plate as the bolt is moved towards shot position, the co-operatiiig, faces of the tongue and plate being inclined so that the window &c. is tightened against its seat. The ends of the bolts, which co-operate with keepers in the usual way, are also bevelled so as to exert a tightening action as the bolts are shot. As applied to double doors stop devices may be provided to arrest the bolt movement when the laterally off-set arms have become disengaged but before the bolts have been completely disengaged, so that, in known manner, one door may be released but release of the other door cannot be completed until the first door has been opened. Figs. 1, 2 show lower and upper bolts 2a, 2b, connected by links 23 with a pivoted lever 21 so that the bolts are simultaneously moved in opposite directions.. The lower bolt is operated by hand-lever 7 and link 9, lever 7 being trough-sectioned to embrace the link when depressed. The ends of the bolts are bevelled to press the door against its frame when fastened. The bolts have off-set arms 11 adapted to engage behind catch-plates 16 on the other door as the bolts are shot, the contacting edges of the parts 11, 16 being bevelled to dram the doors into close contact. Stop pieces 15 may also be provided on the other door and co-operating with arms 11 or with additional members placed elsewhere on the bolts, to arrest withdrawal of the bolts when the parts 15 are disengaged but before the bolts have been completely withdrawn, completion of boltwithdrawal necessitating opening of the released door to remove stops 15 from the paths of arms 11. In the form shown the bolts are let into grooves in the door, but they may be mounted on the face of the door, and Figs. 13, 14 show guiding means for the bolts comprising a fixing screw 3a the head of which has projections adapted to be snapped into recesses 19 in a U-shaped guide 3 which may then be secured by a pin 20. Modified stop arrangements are described in one of which a horizontally sliding plunger is moved by the cam action of a pin on the bolt engaging an inclined slot in the plunger, the end of the plunger abutting against the opposed door edge to arrest bolt movement until said door has been opened, and in another the end of a pivoted lever, actuated when the bolts are moved, abuts against the opposed door edge. In the latter arrangement the connecting lever between the bolts, such as 21, may be utilized, one end of the lever being extended so as to project beyond the edge of the door during part of its swinging movement. A modification is also described in which a single bolt is used, extending the height of the door, and having cranked ends which engage behind hooked keepers.
