[Class 78 (iii)] A' transportable vehicle lift comprises a platform unit 10, side units 15, 16 and four corner pillar units 38, which can be readily. assembled to stand on any part of a floor, no attachment means to the floor being necessary. The platform consists of two parallel section rails 10, having end cross-bars 11, detachably bolted to clamping plates 17 on the beam 15 of the side units. Each beam 15 has fixed to each of its ends a box upright 16 which rides over the pillars 38. The platform carries a motor 22 which drives by a belt 30 a pulley 29 fixed to a casing 28 containing a sun-andplanet reducing gear whereby slow motion is transferred by gear wheels to a shaft 18 extending the length of the beam 15. The shaft 18 has a bevel wheel 19 whereby rotation is imparted to a shaft 12 running the length of a rail 10 and thence to a shaft 18 on the opposite beam 15. Each shaft 18 carries two pinions 20 each of which meshes with a rack 39 extending up the pillar 38. The racks 39 are slidably held between side cheeks 40 on the pillars 38, and are allowed a slight endwise motion limited by stops 41. The hollow uprights 16 have each a bearing roller 21 opposite the pinions 20, and the racks 39 have some teeth missing toward one end to allow the pinions 20 to turn harmlessly should the motor 22 not be shut off when the platform has risen to the top of its limit, the slidability of the rack effecting the same purpose when the platform reaches its bottom position. A second safety stopping means may also be provided in the form of a post 43 supporting two abutments 49 with which the motor switch lever 23 engages at each travel limit of the platform. The planetary gear mechanism prevents any fall of the platform when the motor is not energized, but additional holding means may be provided in the form of pawls 45 on the uprights 16 which engage the rack 39 within, and are all connected together by cranks and links for manual operation into or out of action by a lever 48.
