[Class 114.] In ship's plant where the exhaust from a reciprocating engine driving the main propeller is utilised in an exhaust turbine, the latter is arranged to drive an auxiliary propeller placed at the side of the ship and forward of the main propeller. The main propeller 1 is driven direct by a triple expansion engine 2, 3, 4. The exhaust from the low pressure cylinder 4 passes to a turbine 9 and drives an electric generator 14. The generator is connected by leads to and drives an electric motor 17 which is directly coupled to an auxiliary propeller 18 passing through the side of the vessel. The auxiliary propeller shaft is supported by a bearing block 19 and a stern tube 20, whilst a thrust block 21 and loose coupling 22 are provided within the ship. On the free end of the electric motor is an exciting machine 23. When the ship is being driven by the main propeller water flow will rotate the auxiliary propeller, motor 17 and exciter 23, so that when the turbo generator 14 is rotated excitation is effected. If however, the ship is not under way, the exciter 23 may be connected with the ship's lighting machinery or other auxiliary until such time as the ship is moving. The electric motor 17 is adapted to be air-cooled and the heated air is drawn off through an air-pipe. A reduction gear may be incorporated in the low pressure turbine drive. If desired two such auxiliary propellers may be installed and separate turbine drives used or a common turbo generator employed to energize the motors on the auxiliary shafts.
