Abstract

457,746. Pumps. CROSSLEY-PREMIER ENGINES, Ltd., and YEATES, A. C., Sandiacre, near Nottingham. July 7, 1936, No. 18810. [Class 7 (ii)] The speed of a supercharger is varied in accordance with engine load, by adjusting the fluid level in a hydraulic coupling b in the constant-speed drive thereof, the adjustment is effected by an engine governor, or electrically, by the output of an electric generator driven by the engine. The fluid level is varied through a two-way valve e, a pump f, a tank j, and a return pipe k. The valve is operated by an engine speed-governor a, or electrical means dependent on the load through a lever h, which also controls the amount of liquid fuel injected into the engine cylinders, and a spring h<1>. The valve is also connected to a diaphragm g, under the influence of the pressure in the air delivery pipe c of the pump, and is thus closed again after the pressure has been adjusted.
