Abstract

492,669. Hydraulic apparatus. DOWTY, G. H. March 23, 1937, No. 8530. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] Means for ensuring equality of movement of two constructionally separate elements on aircraft, e.g. wing-flaps and undercarriages, comprise a double-acting hydraulic piston and cylinder 10 operating with each element and cross connections 11, 12 between effectively opposite sides of the pistons so that fluid displaced by the movement of one piston is accommodated by the equal movement of the other piston. In one form, wing-flaps 1, 2 are operated by jacks 3 through pistonrods 4 and horns 5. A byepass 13 and cock 14 may be provided and the system may incorporate known breathing and topping-up means. In a modification the jacks and cylinders 10 are incorporated in single cylinders, the pistons being carried by a common piston-rod. If the supply pipes to the jacks are provided with means to maintain pressure in the system on fracture of one line the cylinders 10 form means by which the movement of one flap is communicated to the other.
