Abstract

1388470 Brake actuators WABCO WESTINGHOUSE GmbH 30 May 1972 [29 May 1971] 25336/72 Heading F2F A brake operating cylinder 1 has a piston 2 in the cylinder defining a pressure chamber for a pressure medium, brake actuating means 13 coupled to the piston and a spring 4 effective on the piston to tend to apply the brakes by means of the brake actuating means if the pressure in the pressure chamber should fall below a particular level, the pressure chamber being divided by a movable wall 7 into two sub-chambers 8, 9 each connectible to a separate source of pressurized medium. As shown, pressure medium is received in the chamber 9 via bores 11 and 12 in the rod 13. If the supply of pressure medium fails in either chamber the piston 2 is maintained against the pressure of the spring 4, and a relaxation of the pressure in the chamber 8 due to operation of a hand-brake causes the spring to move the piston and rod in a direction to apply the brake. The device may be fitted concentrically to a cylinder-piston or diaphragm main brake actuator, Fig. 2 (not shown) or Fig. 3.
