456,521. Grinding edges of glass plates. TRIPLEX (NORTHERN), Ltd., Tower Building, Water Street, Liverpool, and FORBES, L. J. - B., The Crossways, View Road, Rainhill, St. Helens, Lancashire. April 9, 1935, No. 11032. [Class 60] A machine for grinding the periphery of flat glass plates having straight sides and rounded corners comprises a shaft 4 having at one end a frame 2 to which a glass plate 1 is secured by a sucker 3, the shaft being carried by a block 5 secured to two channel irons 7 forming an arm, which is pivoted at 9 to the frame 11. The shaft is driven through worm gears 12, 15, by chain gearing 14, 17 operated by a motor 18 on the arm 7, and an air passage from the sucker 3 communicates with a pipe 20 leading to an exhauster 21 mounted with its motor 22 on the arm 7. Fixed to the arm 7 is an arm 23 on which is slidably adjustable a weight 24 and adjustable, on the arm 7 is a weight 28, which is adjusted so as to bring the centre of gravity of the arm, when carrying a plate 1 of average weight, to some point on the line of the arm 23, so that the pressure of the glass on the grinding-wheel 27 remains substantially constant for all angular positions of the arm 7. When a plate is to be treated on three sides and two corners only, it is oscillated instead of being rotated, and for this purpose, a disc 42 is secured to the shaft 4 and provided with two adjustable lugs 43, which strike the lever 44 of a switch 45 serving to reverse the motor 18. A templet 46 may be employed, when a large number of plates of the same shape require to be ground, the templet being secured to the shaft 4 and engaging a rotary or fixed disc 48 of the same size as the grinding wheel 27. In a modification, the part of the arm 7 above the pivot 9 is omitted and the pivot is mounted on a carriage movable in the plane of movement of the arm by a screw driven by a reversible motor. The motor is controlled by switches operated by a cam bar moved by an arm projecting upwards from the arm 7, so that movement of the arm past predetermined angular positions starts the motor in one or the other direction to move the pivot, thereby maintaining the inclination of the arm substantially constant. The motor 18 may be mounted on the frame 11 and connected to reduction gearing on the arm 7 ; the plate 1 may be clamped to the shaft 4 by a bent arm engaging the outer surface of the plate.
