1400105 Grinding BIELEFELDER UNION BRUNO KOCH MASCHINENFABRIK 11 April 1973 [2 May 1972] 17289/73 Heading B3D A machine for grinding the edges of glass plates 10 comprises at least one grinding tool 16 having a grinding surface and mounted to rotate on a driving shaft 15 of a motor-operated driving mechanism 14, the grinding surface having a width greater than the thickness of a glass plate to be ground, the driving mechanism being mounted on the machine in such a manner that the grinding wheel can be reciprocated across the edge of the glass plate to be ground and transversely to the longitudinal direction of the edge through a distance equal to at least a portion of the width of the grinding surface by means of a lifting device 17 having an adjustable range of movement. As described the machine has a number of grinding wheels arranged in series and the glass sheets are carried past the wheels by a conveyer belt or chain 12 against which the sheets are pressed by a belt or chain 13. Each grinding wheel is mounted on the shaft 15 of a driving unit 14 mounted in a bearing 38 on a support 19 vertically slidable on a column 18. The support has a bracket 26 connected by a pivot 27 to a lever 25, in turn connected by a pivot 28 to one end of a control lever 23 mounted on a pivot 21 on a bracket 22 secured to the column. The other end of the control lever has a roller 24 engaging an eccentric 20 mounted on the bracket and rotated by a motor 29 whereby the support 19, and hence the grinding wheel, is reciprocated in a vertical direction. The lever 25 may be of adjustable length to vary the height of the grinding wheel. The range of the lifting device may be varied by changing the eccentric 20 or by an adjusting device 31 which consists of an eccentric 32 secured to a shaft 32 which is rotatably adjustable by a hand wheel 34. The eccentric is engaged by a support member 36 connected by rods 37 to the support 19 and the position of the eccentric determines the amount of movement imparted to the support by the lifting device. Each driving mechanism 14 may be adjusted by a device 39 about an axis transverse to the axis of the column so that the grinding wheel is at an angle to the plane of the glass sheet 10. A plurality of columns 18 may be provided having one or more drives 14 and the grinding wheels 16 may be such as to effect course and fine grinding in succession. Each guide column is mounted on a pivot at its lower end and has a locking member 43 at its upper end which, when released, permits the column to be swung to an inoperative position for wheel replacement or the like. The columns may be vertical or inclined and tools, such as abrasive belts may be used instead of grinding wheels.
