[Classes 136 (ii) and 136 (iii)] A hand- and foot-propelled cycle, (e.g. a tricycle, tandem bicycle, &c.) is provided, in addition to the usual pedal drive, with a supplementary drive comprising a hand lever which is reciprocated by a second rider in the plane of his seat and is connected to a rear-wheel axle through gearing, transmission mechanism, and a free-wheel clutch. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an ordinary bicycle 11, driven by pedals 44, a chain and free-wheel clutch, is provided with a side attachment comprising a wheel 1 on a shaft 2 adjustably mounted in a yoke 6 secured to a frame comprising a rear member 7, a diagonal member 12, and a side member 15, which members are attached to the bicycle frame 11 by clamps 9, 13, 16, the members 7, 15 being connected by a horizontal member 18. The members 15, 18 support a bearing 19 for a driving-shaft 21, which is connected to the wheel 1 by a sprocket 23, chain 4, and freewheel clutch, and is provided with a pinion meshing with a gear segment 24 on a lever 34, which is pivoted at 25 and is oscillated by means of a handle 35. The hand lever 34 is adapted to be held in an inoperative position by a clamp 37 on a bracket 36, in which position the gear segment is disengaged from its pinion. A seat 38 is mounted on supports 39, 40, and a footrest 41 is clamped to the members 15, 18. The supplementary hand drive may alternatively be mounted on the rear part of a tandem bicycle so as to be operated by the rear rider, the drive being transmitted to the rear wheel by a separate chain and free-wheel sprocket on the opposite side to the main drive operated by pedals by the front rider. Two such tandem bicycles may be coupled together side-by-side.
