Abstract

362,315. Scooters. ETTEN, W. V. VAN, Rockwood Hotel, Bellingham, Washington, U.S.A. May 1, 1931, No. 12883. [Classes 136 (ii) and 136 (iii).] A scooter is propelled by a foot lever 27 pivoted at a point 31 which has a movement of translation imparted to it as the foot lever is operated, as bY means of a link 33 pivoted at 35 to a bracket 36 on the platform 6, such movement of translation and the oscillation of the foot lever being combined to impart driving-motion to a member, such as a rack 38, adapted to actuate a driving-wheel 17 of the scooter. A second link 32 is pivoted at 30 to the lever 27 and at 34 to the bracket 36. A tension spring 37 effects the return movement of the lever 27. The upper end of the rack 38 is secured to cheek-pieces 39 pivoted at 30 to the lever 27. The rack 38 engages a pinion 40 adapted to drive the rear wheels through a one-way roller clutch, and slides through a guide 42 forming part of an oscillative gear-case 41. A brake block 24 is mounted on a lever 23 having a pedal 25. The combined platform and frame 6 is formed of sheet metal downwardly flanged at the edges and connected at the rear to side-bars 22 for mounting the rear axle, the front part a<6> being upwardly bent and tapered and formed with an eye 8 for connection to the pivot pin of the front fork 12.
