Abstract
451,178. Loud-speakers; diaphragms. BIRKBECK, G., 146, Adelaide Road, Hampstead, London. Jan. 29, 1935, No. 2989. [Class 40 (iv)] A diaphragm for a loud-speaker is of a generally conical form and comprises an inner portion 18 of a light, but stiff, material such as thin, light paper, e.g. Bristol board, joined to an outer and larger part 19 of a soft, heavy paper having little elasticity and considerable internal damping. The joint between the parts 18, 19 is formed by overlapping the adjoining edges which are attached by an adhesive to a conical ring 20 of flannel, felt or rubber which minimizes the mutual interaction between the two parts. The diaphragm is supported adjacent the joint by a resilient member, such as a spider 23 secured to lugs 24 on the chassis 10 of the loud-speaker and attached by an adhesive to the outer part 19 at three spaced points. In a modification, Fig. 3, the inner part 18 is attached to a reversed cone 26 provided with a hole 27 to reduce air damping and supported by a further spider member 28 secured to the inner polepiece 13. The coilformer 16 is supported between the reversed cone 26 and a flange 18<a> formed on the inner portion 18 of the diaphragm.
