[Class 8 (i)] [See also Group XXVII] A piston valve controlling inlet or exhaust ports of an internal-combustion engine has its stem 28 connected to a cross-head 26 which is pivoted at 30, 31 to a pair of links 22, 24 actuated by cranks 19, 21 or eccentrics rotating in opposite directions at the same speed, the length of the links being substantially equal to the stroke of the cranks. The cross-head 26 may also be connected to a pump piston 42 formed with ports 44, 46 controlled by valves 45, 47 formed on extensions of the links 22, 24, the discharge valves 40 being provided in the end of the pump cylinder ; the functions of the pump valves may be reversed.
