Abstract

446,774. Hydraulic load-lifting devices. TECALEMIT, Ltd., and CHALMERS, R. A., Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex. Jan. 21, 1935, No. 1948. [Class 78 (iii)] In fluid-pressure jacks in which an air-tube extends axially up a cylinder and into its hollow ram, with its outlet at the top, a liquid, such as oil, occupying the lower parts of both ram and cylinder, means are provided for slowing down the movement of the ram toward the top of its stroke. Air forced up the tube 10 from its extensions 11, 12 presses the oil in the ram 3 out into the cylinder 1 through holes 17 in its base 14 and through the annular gap between a sliding check valve 15 and the tube 10. The rising base 14 comes against a bell - shaped restrictor 21 towards the top of its stroke, and this allows oil to reach the holes 17 &c. thereafter only after passing between the constrictor and its supporting surfaces. The constrictor normally rests on a collar 20 on the tube 10, and the tube may be given a conical shape 23 just above the collar in order gradually to increase the constrictive effect. Location rods 13 support the air-tube top in central position. The ram is cushioned also at the end of its down stroke by providing an enlargement 18 at the base of the tube 10. This causes the valve 15 to be arrested as it passes over the enlargement, and brings a flange 20 on the valve up against the holes 17 to close them against further passage of oil from the cylinder into the ram. A plug 9 is provided in the ram top 7 for filling purposes.
