Abstract

964,309. Garage lifts; fluid pressure jacks. JOYCE-CRIDLAND CO. Feb. 28, 1963 [May 7, 1962], No. 7983/63. Headings B8H and B8J. The oil-containing piston 10 of a garage lift is raised in a cylinder 12 by applying air under pressure to the surface of the oil in the piston through a tube 34 connected to the inlet port 36 in the cylinder base thereby causing oil to flow from the piston to the cylinder through a metering device 18 in the base 16 of the piston, and means are provided which automatically prevent further transfer of oil from the piston when the oil in the piston falls to a predetermined level above the metering device. The metering device 18 comprises a sleeve 50 mounted in the aperture 20 in the piston base 16 and provided with sealing plates 52, 54 surrounding the air tube 34. As the piston is raised, the plate 52 is pressed down on to the piston base 16 and oil passes through an annular passage 60 between the sleeve 50 and tube 34, through a passage 62 in the sleeve 50 and between the base 16 and plate 54 into the cylinder. A floating valve member 70, comprising a sleeve 76 loosely supported on the air tube 34 and provided with floats 72 closes the passage 62 when it engages the metering device 18 due to a fall in the oil level in the piston 16, thereby preventing further raising of the piston 10. A sealing ring 80 is provided on the sleeve 76 and closes the space between the sleeve and the air tube 34 when the sleeve seats on the plate 54. The cylinder is provided with a stop 46 to engage a flange 44 on the base of the piston U.S.A. Specification 2,763,128 is referred to.
