Abstract

344,880. Hydraulic presses ; limiting stroke of press ; pressure-producing apparatus. FORRESTER, H. J. C., 88, Chancery Lane, London.-(Globe Machinery & Supply Co. ; 205, Court Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, U.S.A.) Nov. 29, 1929, No. 36725. [Class 69 (ii).] In a rotary vehicle hoist of the type having a hydraulic cylinder mounted vertically in the ground, a liquid-containing reservoir 18, Fig. 5, is disposed beneath the cylinder 14 and a pipe 22 opening in the bottom of the cylinder passes to the bottom of the reservoir, whilst means are provided for forcing fluid 8 (e.g. air) into the upper part of the reservoir to displace the liquid 20 into the cylinder. The cylinder contains a piston 40 with a hollow piston-rod 16 carrying at its upper end a head 64 to which longitudinal runways 68 are attached by means of transverse supporting bars 66. On applying air pressure to the reservoir 18 the hoist rises until the collar 52 on the pistonrod, Fig. 14, engages with a flange 48 on the cylinder. When this occurs the gauge 34, which registers the pressure of the air, gives an increased reading. The hoist may be retained at any convenient height by thrusting a pin into one of a number of holes 58 in the piston-rod. For retaining the hoist at its highest point an automatic latch is provided which consists of two slide bars 130, pivoted to links 132 connected at their upper ends by springs 136. When the hoist is raised the slide bars snap into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 14, thus sustaining the hoist. To lower, the hoist is somewhat raised to relieve the pressure on the slide bars, which are then partially withdrawn by turning the T-handle 156 thereby lifting wedge 142 to the position shown in dotted lines and forcing the pivots 134 apart. As the hoist descends the slide bars 130 are pressed inwardly by flange 48 and pivots 134 are further separated so that the wedge 142 drops into its original position -reset for the next hoisting.
