Abstract
443,341. Automatic control of arcs. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Aug. 1, 1935, No. 21864. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1934. [Class 38 (iv)] In an arc welding equipment supplied from an A.C. supply, the electrode adjustment is effected by a D.C. motor supplied through a rectifier and controlled in dependence on the voltage across the arc by means of an electromagnetic relay. Closure of the press button switch 8 completes by means of a switch 6 the circuit from the A.C. supply 1 to the welding electrodes 2, 3. The motor 20 which is connected between the electrodes through a rectifier 10 and contacts 23, 24 of a switch 14 starts and feeds the electrode 2 forward to strike the arc. Due to the arc current the switch 16 operates and energizes the solenoid 22 causing the switch 14 to operate, connecting the motor to the A.C. supply in a reversed direction so that the motor operates to retract the electrode. When the arc voltage becomes sufficient, a switch 17 operates, deenergizing the switch 14, so that the motor is again connected across the arc and the rate of feed of the electrode 2 is determined by the arc voltage. The switch 17 also short-circuits resistances 21 and 12 in the armature and field circuits of the motor.
