[Class 38 (iv)] Arcs.-In a flash welding machine the gradual feeding together of the work pieces is controlled according to the current in and/or voltage across the electrodes by means of a grid-controlled vapour discharge tube 18 in the armature circuit of a feeding motor 10, the upsetting of the heated members being effected by the automatic reversal of a second motor 8 after a certain feeding movement. The slide 6 is attached by a ball bearing joint to a rod 7 which is splined to a worm wheel 9 driven by the motor 8 and screwed into a worm wheel 12 driven by the motor 10. When the switch 21 is closed these motors operate in opposition to produce a slow feed of the slide 6, but the fall of voltage in the winding 15 of the welding transformer 14 which occurs as the welding current grows causes an increase in the impedance of the tube 18 and a fall in the speed of the motor 10. Thus, the feeding rate is continually adjusted to maintain a constant welding current. When the slide 6 has advanced sufficiently a switch 22 reverses the motor 8 and the work pieces are upset, the opening of switches 21 and 23 being also effected by the projection 20 from the slide 6.
