Abstract
433,602. Road-or-rail vehicles. MAIN, D. W., 4209, Lincoln Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. Jan. 26, 1935, No. 2664. [Class 108 (ii)] In a road vehicle of the kind that is equipped with additional or pilot wheels for guiding the vehicle upon a railway track, the pilot wheels 4 are adapted to be pressed upon the rails by means of springs arranged above and longitudinally of the pilot axle and the effort of which is adjustable whereby a variable proportion of the weight of the vehicle is taken by the pilot wheels. In the construction shown the pilot axle 8 is connected by shackles 22 to a transverse leaf spring 18, the centre of which is embraced by a clevis 34 capable of vertical adjustment through the medium of crossed links 26, 28 and screw 40 supported by an extension 2 of the frame A. A pair of loops 44 pass around the spring 18 and axle 8 so that the wheels 4 may be raised completely from the rails when desired. The road wheels E may themselves run on the rails H when guided, but are preferably associated with alternative flanged wheels D on the same main axle B. Flat resilient blades 10 are bolted to the two axles B, 8 so as to permit the wheels 4 to ride over any inequalities in the track, while simultaneously preventing any relative displacement between the two axles in a lateral direction.
