Abstract

[Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] [See also Group XXXIII] A reciprocating blade impeller is formed with a number of blades pivotally mounted on radial axes, the blade members being reciprocated within a tube. Blades 1 are mounted on a vertical axis 2 attached to a reciprocating shaft 5. The blades are surrounded by casing 3 which moves with the shaft in a tube 4 and this casing carries an obstruction bar whereby in the feathered position of the blades they are held slightly open. In the working position the blades have their outer edges in close contact with the casing 3 and to assist in this the shaft may have resilient members tending to urge the blades to the open position. The after surfaces of the blades are shaped so that the section is semi-elliptical and whereby and in the feathered position resistance to the passage of the air or water is reduced. In the place of two blades a number of pairs of blades may be used of sector form, each pair being on a radial axis. In a modification the casing 3 may be omitted and the blades allowed to contact with the main tube 4 and in this case the blade tips may be provided with rollers 7. Also a number of resilient rods 8 carried from a cross shaft 9 are used to urge the blades to the operative position. The cross shaft 9 can be guided by a sleeve outside the casing, the main trunk being slotted at 10 for this purpose.
