Abstract
521,868. Screw propellers and impellers. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and WILKINSON, G. S. Nov. 29, 1938, No. 34695. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXVI] In apparatus for pumping, or for propelling aircraft or watercraft, comprising two coaxial screw propellers or impellers lying adjacent to one another, rotated simultaneously in opposite directions, and each having blades which project a substantial distance radially from a hub, the blades are so angularly spaced apart that, in one or more relative rotational positions, when the blade A<1> of one propeller axially eclipses a blade B of the other propeller, the remaining blade or blades B<1>, B<2> of the second propeller are partly, and at least some of them wholly, visible between the blades A, A<2>, A<3> of the first propeller. Other examples illustrated in the Specification include (i) a two-bladed propeller used with a three-bladed propeller; (ii) two four-bladed propellers, one with blades equally spaced apart at angles of 90 degrees, and the other with blades at angles of 45 degrees and 135 degrees; (iii) two three-bladed propellers either or both of which have blades separated by unequal angles such as 100, 110, 120, 130 and 140 degrees. Of this last kind, Fig. 7 shows two propellers in which, when the blade K of the second propeller is eclipsed by the blade J of the first propeller, the blades K<1> and K<2> of the second propeller are likewise eclipsed by the blades J<1>, J<2> of the first propeller.
