Abstract

430,333. Crank chambers. VICTOR OIL ENGINES (COVENTRY), Ltd., and WEAVER, W. A., Cox Street, Coventry, and FLETCHER, M. HAMILTON-, Studland Manor, Studland, Dorset. Oct. 11, 1933, Nos. 27981/33 and 28974/34. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] In a compression-ignition internal - combustion engine having pumps for cooling liquid and for lubricating-oil, passages for the circulation of the cooling medium are provided in the body of the oil circulating pump. The two pumps may be combined in a single unit, the housings 61, 62, Fig. 6, being attached to the front wall of the crankcasing. Gear-wheels 64, 64 draw oil from the sump by way of a passage 64<c>, and expel it through an orifice 64d, from which it passes through a filter 72 and passages in the wall of the crank-casing to the main bearings and to those for the auxiliaries. Gear wheels 65, 65 circulate cooling water around the oil-pump from the inlet 69 to the outlet 70. Pinions 66, 66 may also be provided for use as a bilge pump for a motor boat. The oil filter 72 is of the disc-type, its outlet being combined with a spring- pressed valve which yields to byepass the filter if the latter becomes choked. A plate 15, detachably mounted on the crank casing, carries the bearings for the cams and guides for the associated tappets. A groove 21 in the underside of the plate forms an oil-distribution duct, and a central depression constitutes an oil-well into which the cams dip as they rotate. The tappets 23 are adjustable through an opening 31 in the boss behind the bush 25, and the fuel-oil pump is bolted to the end of the same boss. Oil ducts are formed in the tappets, running from the duct 21 to the tappet face and rearwardly through the tappet-rod sockets and stems to the rockers 37. From the socket 37 oil falls into the space beneath the valve coverplate and returns to the sump by the duct 14. A cross-duct 38 drains oil which falls from the socket 35 into the upper part of the casing. Removable covers 46, 47 may be provided, the latter having a valve 46 for admitting air to the crank case.
