Abstract
426,595. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO., 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 20, 1934, No. 24014. Convention date, May 22. [Class 130] In a continuous-rod cigarette-making machine, tobacco is forwarded to the rod former tongue 32 between a pair of travelling belts 15, passing through a guiding trough 16 provided with a cover block 17, and is compressed first by a narrow tongue 18 having an inclined compressing surface 19 and then by a rotatable wheel 25, the cigarette paper P and rod forming tape T being fed under the tobacco stream between the bottom plate 23 of the trough 16 and the rod former plate 24. The trough 16 is so shaped that the belts are in contact at their lower edges to form a V-shaped channel at the feed end thereof but are gradually separated to become vertical and parallel to one another at the mouth of the former tongue 32 where the compression wheel 25 is located. This wheel 25, which may be driven by frictional contact with the belts 15, is provided with a circumferential slot 30 to receive as shown the end 31 of the compression tongue 18 which serves also to strip the stream of tobacco from said wheel. The compression tongue 18 is mounted within the trough 16 by a bar 20 and thumbscrews 21.
