Abstract

480,383. Cigarette-making machines. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Nov. 17, 1936, No. 31427. Convention date, June 1. [Class 130] In order to prevent irregularities or choking in a continuous-rod machine, vibratory movement is imparted to an element by which the stream of tobacco is confined and compacted to cigarette-rod size. As shown, a rod-forming tongue 14 is supported at one end by a bracket 13 encircling an eccentric 12 on the shaft of a motor 11, and at the other end by a flat spring 16 secured to a bar 17. The tongue 14 is thus vibrated at an angle to the direction of travel of the tobacco on the tape 18. In a modification, Fig. 4, the forward end of the vibrating tongue is provided with a projection 15a guided by a slotted member 20, and the downward movement of the tongue is limited by means of a lug 22 on the tongue provided with an adjustable screw 23 engaging one of the side bars 21. The tongue may have a stepped or serrated surface to impart a positive forwarding and compacting action on the tobacco, and its forward movement may be at a speed greater than the speed of travel of the tobacco stream:
