Abstract

421,023. Motor-car bonnet fastenings. BASSICK CO., 38, Austin Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut, U.S.A. March 2, 1934, No. 6694. Convention date, March 20, 1933. [Class 44] A motor-car bonnet fastening consists of an arm pivoted about an axis at right angles to the surface of the bonnet and spring-pressed upwards into engagement with a keeper on the chassis frame to firmly hold the bonnet down. In one form, Figs. 1-3, the arm 24 is entirely outside the bonnet and forms an operating handle, and its end 36 engages with a hook-like keeper 38. The arm 24 is formed with a spindle 26 which bears in a rectangular casing 18 secured to the inner face of the bonnet and is slotted to receive the inner end 28 of a coil spring 29, the outer end of which abuts against the casing 18. Pivotal movement of the arm 24 is limited by a washer 31 keyed to the spindle 26 and having a cut-away portion to co-operate with a lug 35 bent up from the casing 18. The parts are held together by a split pin 33. In one slightly modified form (not shown), the casing 18 of circular formation is secured to the outer face of the bonnet, the outer end of the spring 29 is hooked to engage with a hook on the casing and the split pin 33 is replaced by a screw screwed into the end of the spindle 26. In another slightly modified form (not shown), the end of the arm 24 is bent inwardly to pass through an arcuate slot in the bonnet and to engage with a keeper on the inside of the chassis frame, the arcuate slot serving to limit the pivotal movement of the arm 24. In all these forms, the bonnet may be pressed tightly against the chassis frame by flexing the bonnet or the arm 24 or by inclining the interengaging surfaces of the arm 24 and its keeper. In another form, Fig. 21, the arm 104 is entirely inside the bonnet and is keyed to a handle spindle 101 and retained thereon by a nut 105, pivotal movement being limited by lugs 107 on the casing 69. In a modified form (not shown), the arm 104 has attached to it near its keeper-engaging end an operating knob, the shank of which passes through an arcuate slot in the bonnet.
