Abstract

482,889. Door fastenings. SLEIGH, H. L., CHESTON, A. S., and STUART, G. M., and McELROY, M., [Representatives of STUART, F. J.]. Oct. 2, 1936, No. 26720. [Class 44] A door fastening, particularly for use on motor vehicles, comprises a casing 10 fixed transversely on the edge of the door 12 and provided with converging upper and lower faces 13, 14 which engage with a wedge action in a correspondingly shaped keeper 40 mounted on the fixed post 41, a catch projecting from one of the converging faces to retain the case in the keeper. As shown, the catch comprises a spring strip 21 conforming with the inner wall of the casing and secured thereto at 22, the free end 47 of the spring being bent downward to project through an aperture in the wall 14. Secured to the spring is a strip having a bowed nose portion 19 projecting from the casing, and a vertical limb 20 with inturned upper end 23. Nose 19 snaps over a lip 46 into a recess 45 in the casing, end 47 acting as a safety catch when the door is not fully closed. Release is effected from outside by handle spindle 27, Fig. 4, with boss 25 and follower arm 26 engaging projection 23 to lift nose 19 on clockwise rotation of the spindle. Anticlockwise rotation of spindle 27 is limited by an arm 33 on boss 25 engaging a lug 37. Release from inside is effected by handle spindle 31 with boss 29 and follower arm 30 adapted, on clockwise rotation, to engage and lift arm 26. An arm 36 on boss 29 engages, on reverse rotation of spindle 31, under arm 33 to prevent release by the outside handle. A spring 38 has a rounded portion adapted to snap into either of two recesses in boss 29 to retain spindle 31 against accidental movement from either of its two operative positions. Spindles 27, 31 are disposed close to the edge of the. door to give maximum clearance for the usual vertically-sliding window. A modification is described using a pivoted spring-biassed pawllike catch adapted to engage one of two recesses in the lower wall of the keeper, the first-engaged recess giving a safety catch action.
